LPN and ST Candidates perform the duties of an LPN/Surgical Tech in the Operating Room (RN''s see below)
· Requirements:
o Education: Can be either: 1. Graduate of a practical nursing program and possesses a current license to practice as an LPN in the state of Virginia. OR 2. Graduate of a surgical technician program.
o Experience: 1 year or more preferred, but not required.
o Certification: Certified as a surgical technician preferred but not required.

· Job Duties:
o The LPN scrub nurse/ ST functions in the scrub" role
o Demonstrates knowledge of OR policies and procedures and the ability to scrub on all surgical procedures performed at CMH.
o Demonstrates the application of principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner that provides optimal patient care in the OR.
o Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills, i.e. obtains DPC, pulls" instruments and supplies, sets up instrument table(s) and Mayo stand, assist with positioning, prepping, and draping of patients, sets up equipment in the room, etc.
o Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on basic surgical cases. Maintains cost effectiveness through prudent use of supplies and equipment.
o Assists in keeping physician preference cards up to date.
o Performs the duties and tasks in the turn-around" process, (cleaning of the room, equipment, etc.) and strives to keep turn-around times within designated timeframes.
o Assists in obtaining and labeling specimens and demonstrates the ability in preparing specimen for transport to the appropriate destination and order entry process.
o Restocks OR rooms with designated supplies. Ensures a clean and tidy work area throughout scope process.
The LPN scrub nurse/ ST is responsible to provide individual and family centered nursing care, accept responsibility for his/her acts, fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to the patient, and assure patient safety, and quality nursing care
o Communication skills are used effectively with patients, family, significant others, and members of the health care team.
o Executes principles of crisis intervention to maintain patient safety.
o Provides appropriate education to patients, family, and significant others to promote health, facilitate rehabilitation, and maintain wellness.
o Serves as a patient advocate.
o Demonstrates adherence to patient safety practices; i.e. labels all solutions on the table. Involves the patient/family and other healthcare providers in formulating expected outcomes when possible/appropriate.
RN Candidates will perform above "Scrub" role, as well as function as a Circulating Nurse in the Operating Room
Uses critical thinking and evidence based practice to treat and educate patients, provide emotional support and advice, evaluate, plan, prevent disease, promote good health and help patients and their families deal with illness and injury.
· Requirements:
o Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or foreign school approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing or licensed pending State Board approval. Licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) or a licensed member of a Compact state.
o Experience: 1 year of med-surg experience preferred but not required.
o Certification: Specialty certification preferred but not required.
· Job Duties:
o Assessment and Diagnosis: collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient''s health or the situation and analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnoses or issues.
o Planning and Advocacy: identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation, develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes.
o Implementation, Coordination, Teaching, and Health Promotion: implements the identified plan, coordinates care delivery and employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment.
o Evaluation: evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes. Collaborates with patient, significant others, and health care providers in providing and evaluating care.
o Education and Professional Practice Evaluation: attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice and evaluate one''s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.
o Collegiality, Collaboration, and Accountability: interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues. Collaborates with patient, family and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
o Leadership: provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.
