Reliability, Maintainability & Safety Engineer

Job Designation

Provides technical expertise to support optimization of systems and equipment safety and reliability parameters. To provide analysis and expertise to ensure that systems meet their safety objectives, that are reliable and which require minimum expenditure to support throughout operational life.

The role requires the conducting of system safety and reliability analysis activities undertaken to ensure that, within timescale and budget constraints, the system is demonstrably safe and reliable by design and build, and that all necessary customer, regulatory body safety and reliability related endorsements are obtained for operation.

Job Core Responsibilities

+ Specific Accountabilities

+ Maintenance of a detailed and robust plan for the work undertaken, and budgeting and tracking of resources against the plan

+ Performance of safety assessment activities associated with the role to achieve the timely substantiation of the designs to enable the system to enter into service

+ Provide technical leadership and oversee, review and approve analyses and assessments performed by suppliers and work-share partners

+ Support the development and production of standards and processes for the management of reliability and safety to ensure that the future development of MABS objectives and activities are appropriately aligned and acceptable

+ Provide a source of expertise and advice to other members of the RMS Team and the project in relation to project safety and reliability matters.

Provide technical expertise in safety and reliability engineering with an in depth knowledge and experience of fault analysis techniques, processes and tools emphasising the following analyses and reports:

+ Reliability Predictions

+ Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

+ Failure Modes and Effects Summary (FMES)

+ Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

+ Common Mode Analysis (CMA)

+ Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA)

+ System Safety Assessment (SSA)

+ Maintainability and MSG-3 Analyses

In addition to the specific RMS analyses and reports identified above, the following responsibilities may also be assigned:

+ Development of processes and procedures to support the RMS roadmap

+ Derivation of Safety Requirements in System/HW/SW Specifications

+ Participate in ARP4754A related audits, design reviews and Systems Engineering peer reviews

+ Provide the project team with expert safety and reliability advice throughout the development phase and at key milestones such as design reviews

Job Specifications

Education: Post-secondary degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations

Years experience: 4 years relevant experience


+ Good knowledge of complex electronic systems and the associated safety and reliability issues

+ Experience in carrying out safety and reliability analyses such as Reliability Predictions, Functional and Piece Part FMEA, FTA, CMA (ARP4761)

+ Planning, delivering and managing work packages throughout the system development lifecycle and consolidating into a system safety assessment (PSSA, SSA)

+ Providing reliability predictions through appropriate analysis

+ Plan and develop reliability growth and validation activities to meet all reliability requirements

+ Provide cost and schedule estimates on complicated engineering programs

+ Must be able to work in close liaison with customers, suppliers and work-share partners

+ Interfacing with third party certification bodies

+ Good general IT skills and proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

+ Knowledge of safety approval processes and regulatory requirements and experience of delivering against these

+ Understanding of aircraft systems

+ Brake Control System architectural understanding

+ Familiarity with tools such as CAFTA, PTC Windchill, Relex and DOORS

+ Knowledge of software and hardware development practices and design assurance methods (DO-178, DO-254)

+ Working knowledge of ARP4754A

+ Strong understanding of Engineering fundamentals

+ Be able to demonstrate the ability to use technical knowledge in the support of other departments (engineering, production, procurement, projects) and the development of less experienced engineering personnel.

+ A self-motivated, self-starter who works well in a team

+ Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

+ Meticulous attention to detail

+ Excellent organisational skills including priority setting and time management

+ Excellent planning, leadership, interpersonal, decision-making, problem-solving, oral and written communication skills
