Essential Job Functions:

1. Clinical Care . Provides comprehensive and high quality respiratory care related interventions in all care settings to all age groups as outlined by current licensure scope of practice. Possesses the skills necessary to provide accurate cardiopulmonary assessment and determine patient needs. Demonstrates advanced critical thinking skills and knowledge in difficult, complex and high risk procedures.

2. Competency. Pursues self-professional growth by attending and/or performing continuing education in order to maintain standards and improve patient care skills. Maintains knowledge of current practice, evidence based medicine and changes in the field of respiratory care related to all patient age groups as specified in the Required Competencies section.

3. Communicator . Promotes professionalism by demonstration of leadership through communication, effective working relationships and fostering mutual respect within the health care team.

4. Patient Care Assignments . Rotates to all acute care and general care areas. Will not be solely assigned to manage patients in NICU. May be assigned patients in Critical Care and Burn Center units, but will not be responsible to manage High Frequency Ventilation. May be delegated to the Charge role.

5. Leadership and Professionalism . Serves as a resource person to management, physicians, nursing and staff. Assists in policy and protocol development. Provides education and training to new staff, nurses, physicians, respiratory care students and staff. Demonstrates professionalism when dealing with other team members. Facilitates a collaborative spirit assuring teamwork in the critical care area. Follows the Core Values and Service Excellence Standards as established by the organization.



Must be a graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care.


1. Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Nebraska required.

2. RRT credential by the NBRC required.

3. Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.


1. Requires technical knowledge and skills to assess and provide Respiratory Care therapeutic interventions. Must possess a broad and diverse knowledge of all cardiopulmonary techniques utilized.

2. Two to three years of clinical practice preferred.

3. Must possess skills to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members and other staff members.

Professionalism/Growth and Development:

1. Attends and/ or completes all required mandatory educational and other assigned activities.

2. Maintain skills and competencies related to the field of Respiratory Care required for the position.

3. Attends all mandatory departmental meetings and in-services as indicated.

4. Expands knowledge by attending seminars/workshops in the development of professional growth.

5. Participates in department-specific and cross-functional teams in order to enhance departmental efficiencies, systems, education, patient care processes or personal growth.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

1. Requires walking up to 2.5 mph for 10 minutes.

2. Hazardous conditions exist on occasion with exposure to extreme temperatures from hot devices.
