Job Description The Research Scientist will manage a soybean breeding program to integrate novel native and transgenic traits into elite high-yielding germplasm.
Duties/Responsibilities Develop and lead a research team that will integrate key agronomic traits into elite high-yielding germplasm. This would include building and leading a strong research team at the research center and associated programs at winter nursery locations. Collaborate with other scientists and teams to develop and implement selection and introgression strategies, including the application of molecular markers. Trait targets for this program would include, but not be limited to, herbicide resistance, resistance to soybean cyst nematode, iron-deficiency chlorosis, Phytophthora root rot, white mold, brown stem rot and soybean aphid. Active participant on product development teams within soybean research. Provide scientific leadership and recommend technology applications to research leadership team.
Education and Experience Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Molecular Breeding or closely related field plus 4-6 years of related experience required. Master's degree and 6-8 years of related experience will be considered, or equivalent amounts of relevant education and work experience. Support skills in statistics, plant pathology, biotechnology, and agronomy are preferred.
Competencies Must be self-motivated and possess strong interpersonal, plus verbal and written communication skills. Ability to lead, innovate and succeed in a team environment. Attention to detail, commitment to accuracy, and good organizational skills are necessary. Ability to identify improvements and willingness to continually enhance processes is critical. Experience and ability to apply molecular markers a plus. Good statistical background required.
