Statistics & Information Specialist - International
Job Description ESPN is seeking someone with strong news judgment, excellent Spanish writing skills and elite sports knowledge (current and historical) to fill a new role as a Stats & Information International Specialist. Based in Bristol, CT, this person will be responsible for duties in the BottomLine and Production Research departments.
The Specialist will be a go-to staff member in the day-to-day production of Stats & Information's international content on all ESPN platforms, including the BottomLine, ESPN Deportes and ESPNDeportes.com. This staffer will need to use their extensive knowledge of domestic and international sports to provide content, context and ensure the accuracy of live programming that has a heavy soccer emphasis. This person will be asked to develop storylines for a variety of ESPN's platforms including Spanish and English programming. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to write BottomLine headline messages and make minute-by-minute decisions on the value of each breaking news story. The Specialist also will perform research duties for Deportes programming, producing graphics that tell stories based on statistics and trends, providing on-air talent with information to supplement stories and much more. The Specialist will research a variety of show, including Fuera de Juego, Beisbol Esta Noche, NFL Esta Noche and event programming. The Specialist will also be a contributor to SIG's Publishing efforts as both a creator of original content and aiding in the process of translating existing content.
The Specialist will be a leader in the department in terms of content, mentoring, recognizing long-term issues, and generating ideas related to the future of SIG's international coverage. This person will interact with content decisions makers across ESPN to ensure content is consistent with editorial directions and treatments both internationally and domestically. This person will consider the broader ESPN-wide perspective and demonstrate leadership competencies in leading themselves, and on occasion SIG's international BottomLine or Research newsrooms.
In addition, the Specialist will be given ownership of long-term projects or assignments within the Stats & Information Group. The Specialist also will be required to be proficient in the use of all SIG tools and remain up to date on new developments.

Responsibilities . Be proficient in the use of all BottomLine and Research applications and tools to enable them to perform duties at a high level in both departments.
. Use extensive knowledge of domestic and international sports to provide content, context and ensure the accuracy of live news-and-information studio shows that have a heavy soccer emphasis.
. Utilize broad and deep sports knowledge to ensure that the BottomLine, graphics, game notes, anchor scripts and reporter scripts are factually and statistically accurate.
. Develop original graphics that provide statistical or factual analysis of events, news stories and topical issues.
. Research original content for virtually every element of a studio show. Provides real-time updates and trend notes for anchors in studio and for score panels.
. Develop and communicate storylines for a variety of ESPN's platforms including both Spanish and English programming.
. Mentor Researchers and BottomLine Editors demonstrating managerial skills. They will foster teamwork by providing their teammates timely, balanced feedback, as well as by keeping management aware of superior and inferior individual performance.
. Participate in SIG's publishing efforts as both a generator of original content and aiding in the process of translating existing content.
. Plan, facilitate and lead meetings and/or educational seminars within any of the SIG departments or related groups.
. Incorporate Next Level and advanced metrics into all aspects of work, as part of a wide array of research tools.
. Take a proactive approach to working with managers to address issues and offer suggestions on solving problems.
. Interact with content decision makers within and outside of the BottomLine/Research (e.g. News Editors; show producers) to ensure content is consistent with all editorial directions and treatments, both domestically and internationally.
Basic Qualifications . Must be bilingual including the ability to speak, read and write in English and in Spanish.
. Must have elite Spanish writing skills.
. Possess very deep and broad sports knowledge, especially in international soccer. Must have expert-level recall of current and historical sports statistics, news, events and milestones.
. The ability to translate the written word from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
. Must be able to communicate information accurately, while also having strong grammar skills.
. Must be able to adhere to strict deadlines and react to breaking news.
. Availability to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications . Two years professional experience working with statistics or covering or analyzing sports events, news and issues
. At least two years of experience in an editorial role, preferably with leadership accountability.
. Experience working with a Spanish language media outlet (TV/Radio station, Newspaper or reputable website)
. Experience covering international or professional soccer with a TV/Radio station, Newspaper or reputable website.
. Demonstrated achievement in training or overseeing team-based projects.
. Excellent word skills and have demonstrated outstanding news judgment in a production environment. The ideal candidate is familiar with AP and ESPN style and must possess the credibility to be the standard-bearer in how best to craft and execute news in any situation.
. Must possess significant, broad-based sports knowledge of a variety of sports, especially international soccer. Must have demonstrated - at ESPN or in a similar environment -- the ability to make editorial decisions that serve the fan.
. Must possess outstanding organization skills and the ability to simultaneously manage multiple shift priorities.
. Demonstrated proficiency in working on collaborative teams that hit deadlines and achieve objectives.
. Must be a creative self-starter capable of buying-in to a vision and understanding that leadership is not a position-based trait.
. A comprehensive and inclusive communication style that reaches across groups and job levels is essential. Must be capable of establishing buy-in from peers, management and outside groups through the clear communication of priorities and expectations.
. Knowledge of existing ESPN Research and BottomLine tools.
. The ideal candidate knows sports research methods, as well as how to locate (and when to trust) relevant editorial Web resources.
. The ability to speak, read and write in English and in Portuguese.
