Responsibilities:
Obtains brief synopsis of facts surrounding alleged sexual assault to guide in evidence collecting. Collaborates with other professionals (e.g., health care providers, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, victim advocates, and protective services.) in delivery of comprehensive medical forensic care. Instructs patients on pertinent aspects of health care. Provides information regarding medical condition treatment plans, and support services to ensure optimal patient knowledge. Encourages and develops patient cooperation and participation in the recovery process. Provides professional forensic nursing care through use of the nursing process, utilizing the five rights of medication administration (to administer medications according to established standards and policies/procedures), monitoring the life-support and automated equipment, and performance of routine, technical, and complex treatments (e.g., venipuncture, insertion and removal of tubes, wound care, forensic colposcopy, photography, etc.) according to standards and policies/procedures. Communicates patient needs to other health care workers, protective services, victim, services, and law enforcement as needed. Involves the patient, family, and/or significant other when obtaining information, planning care, and providing care as appropriate. Provides comfort, support, and information based upon identified needs and level of understanding. Performs duties specific to the sexual assault nurse examiner program such as triage, comprehensive medical forensic services, and medical screening examinations for sexual assault patients meeting SANE program criteria for service.
Requirements:Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State ofMichigan. Successful completion of SANE Nurse Examiners Program within one year. One year of acute care nursing experience required. Experience in emergency/trauma and/or women's health and/or management experience preferred
