Job Description: Essential Functions
The Pathologist Assistant is responsible for the following:
.Assures appropriate specimen accessioning
.Obtains pertinent clinical information and history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc.
.Describes gross anatomic features of surgical specimens
.Prepares tissues for histological processing
.Obtains biological samples such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry,etc.
.Performs special procedures including faxitron imaging and tumor triage
.Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for light microscopy (routine processing)
.Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for special procedures such as frozen section, electron microscopy and immunoflourescence microscopy
.Maintains clean, well organized, and properly stocked work areas.
.Photographs appropriate gross specimens and microscopic slides
.Performs duties relating to the administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data, including the filing of reports, protocols, photographic data or slides, microscopic slides assisting in the completion of specimen coding and billing.
.Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies and cleanliness of the anatomic pathology department.
.Assists in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences
.Performs job function in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
.Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and Policies & Procedures.
.Accommodates changes in workload within the department
.During light workload situations, uses time to departmental advantage by performing additional tasks/duties for the department.
.Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
.Keeps supervisor or lead appropriately informed when problems or unusual situations arise.
.Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to department advantage.
.Participates in efforts to improve the department through participation in QI activities.
.Demonstrates problem solving initiative and problem solving skills which include appropriate activities, follow up and documentation.
.Participates in the training of new employees, and offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
.Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for error prevention.
.Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.
.Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries and complaints.
.Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
.Perform other duties as assigned.
