Job Description Details:**


**Position Summary:** The Medical Receptionist is responsible for a variety of duties. This includes checking patients in when they arrive and checking them out when they leave. Additionally, this position is responsible for appointment reminder calls to the patients, scanning/filing of all incoming paperwork and taking messages from patients/visitors that walk-in.


**Qualifications:** Minimum high school education, one-year previous office experience, preferably in a medical setting, computer experience and ability to learn new computer skills as required.


**Essential Functions and Responsibilities:**


Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.


Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.


Maintains knowledge to perform the duties of the job. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.


Demonstrates self-directed learning.


Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.


Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.


Identifies and assists in resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation and maintenance of the environment.


Practices effective communication in all interactions (patient, visitor, co-worker, etc.)


Promotes a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork.


Checks in patients when the arrive, verifying all demographic information, scans insurance card(s), obtains consent and notifies patient of the HIPAA Regulations.


Completes disability paperwork.


Checks out patients when they leave, collecting copays and any prior balances.


Records/balances amount collected at checkout for the day and compiles a daily report for the Billing Coordinator.


Makes copies of insurance cards and demographic forms for the Radiology Department.


Calls all patient's 2 days in advance to remind them of their upcoming appointment.


Enters insurance authorizations.


Sorts and distributes incoming mail.


Mails out Satisfaction Survey's and No Show letters.


Sorts, verifies, scans and files all paperwork pertaining to the patient, into their electronic chart.


Sorts all incoming faxes, and faxes out all documentation that requires a physician's signature.


Takes messages from all patient's/visitor's that walk into the office.
