Network Engineer
General Purpose of Position:
Individuals in the Network job family are primarily responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolution in the Network Operations Center (NOC). Individuals are responsible for all network hardware including platforms from Cisco, HP, Checkpoint, and Bluecoat. They are routinely involved with the configuration and maintenance of physical and logical network components. They also provide support for network issues that come through the customer service center. They demonstrate a high level of knowledge surrounding general networks and display strong troubleshooting skills. Individuals are also skilled in the use of network diagnostic tools and software aids for the investigation of network problems. It is also desired that individuals have working knowledge in both firewall administration and voice/video technologies. The individual must be up for the challenge and be prepared to work collaboratively with various GM organizations to implement and provide operational support for network operations to keep GM''s global network infrastructure running secure and efficient.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for troubleshooting, installing, implementing, administering, and maintaining network systems and providing Tier I support. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Monitoring, Integration, and Support/Maintenance. Provides support for network connectivity or related network issues for the user community; Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves network problems; Coordinates the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network components. Monitors network activity and identifies network problems. Researches, analyzes, and implements software or hardware changes to rectify any network issues; Assesses network performance to ensure that it meets the present and future needs of the enterprise. Monitors services provided by vendors to ensure service levels meet requirements. Usually provides timely and complete project status reports to supervisor as requested.
Qualifications
Knowledge:
- This position will be assigned to provide operational support to the NOC. The position will also require strong technical knowledge of network devices and configurations to ensure the GM environment is running efficiently. This position requires a strong understanding and certification levels across a broad array of technologies including routing/switching, security, and VoIP. The position will be located at the GM Network Operations Center (NOC) in Warren, MI.
Education:
- Requires bachelor''s degree in computer science, information systems or other related field, or equivalent work experience
Experience:
- Requires at least 5-7 years of relevant IT work experience
