Director, Mechanical Design Engineering
**Job Summary:
**Lead the plant engineering team responsible for the design and specification of industry leading custom designed shell and tube heat exchangers that effectively balance safety, quality, reliability, operational efficiency, and cost effectiveness. Actively engaged in the exchanger design process from concept to fabrication to ensure the client's needs for custom equipment are met or exceeded. Collaborate with overall business to forge innovative solutions to meet design specifications and solve problems with new and existing designs. Define and implement the necessary staff, facilities and equipment needed for the successful design and specification of customer orders. Must also bring excitement and passion to this role and expect the same of the team. Serve as a resident expert in performing engineering calculations, which serve as the basis for the fabrication and/or repair of custom designed shell and tube heat exchangers.****
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
**Review customer specifications to gain a comprehensive understanding of the customers' design criteria, schedule and budget to create appropriate design criteria and project priorities. Review and evaluate customer design criteria and interpret and apply design codes and standards to ensure products conform to approved design criteria and Ohmstede standards.
Perform calculations using RCS system, PV Elite/CodeCalc, Compress and/or supplemental manual calculations to determine appropriate design and associated processes from concept to fabrication. Ensure company engineering and drawing standards are utilized and enforced.
Evaluate mechanical systems and products by designing and applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials. Assure system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, and assembly processes.
Review and assess engineering drawings in compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices, and company standards; developing technical specifications, design calculations and analytical solutions.
Prepare Bills of Material for long lead items at beginning of job and finalize Bill of Material after drawings are completed. Ensure material salvage requirements are adequate to achieve final product requirements.
In conjunction with Operations leadership and selected vendors, develop manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components. Ensure machine design for manufacturability.
Collaborate with Welding Wngineering on selecting proper weld procedures to be used in fabrication of heat exchanger and getting procedures approved for use.
Ensure design and specification deviations from established specifications, drawings, and/or estimates are appropriately documented and reviewed by appropriate management before implementation. Prepare analysis of cost implications to the business regarding deviations
Develops, tracks, and communicates Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure the Plant Engineering team contribution is aligned with the overall business strategy.
Prepare employee development plans and Performance Appraisals. Set objectives with individual contributors to ensure employee development and performance goals are met. Lead technical sharing forums to foster innovation at the Plant and participate in corporate initiatives.
Set organizational direction and change through excellent interpersonal, writing, planning and presentation skills to gain alignment.
Prepare project status to communicate risks to leadership with proper level of detail and recovery plans.
Encourage cross-functional teams to work seamlessly across boundaries to ensure successful project execution. Lead collaboration efforts across organization to leverage best practices, expertise, and shared resources.
Demonstrate flexibility in responding to unexpected demands due to changes in project scope or deadline. Use strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks to effectively handle deadline pressures without creating workflow problems for others.
Updates engineering schedule weekly. Creates and executes work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.****
Education - B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Knowledge - Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency of design and fabrication of shell and tube heat exchanger, pressure vessels or related custom engineered equipment. Possess working knowledge of ASME code, specifically section VIII and IX. Computer aided design knowledge. Thermal design knowledge preferred.
Skills - Excellent engineering skills, whereby Statics and equipment design/fabrication is imperative. Comprehension of technical specification & requirements is a must. Strong self-drive, high level of self-accountability and sense of urgency is a prerequisite. Possess good communications in both written and verbal form. Possess 5 years of project engineering experience in a custom engineered and fabricated product. Evidence of initiative to improve personal and interpersonal skills as well as ability to work effectively with all internal and external levels and groups is a must. Proven experience in leading and mentoring engineering staff to build capability and impactful results. Demonstrated problem solving skills including identifying problems, anticipating issues and implications, and developing alternative solutions. Proven track record of creativity and innovation.
