Commodity Buyer
SUMMARY
Purchases merchandise, materials, components, equipment, and/or services. Participates as supply chain Subject Matter Expert on cross-functional new product development teams. Drives new product development supply chain initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Purchases materials, parts, supplies, and equipment following established purchasing policies and procedures and optimizes price, delivery, and terms; purchases complex items where detailed specification is involved.
Displays technical knowledge from an Engineering standpoint as well as understanding of manufacturing processes and able to identify quality differentiators between products and suppliers. Ability and experience in participating in and conducting supplier audits.
This seasoned-level position is involved in developing specifications and requires analysis to balance the value of competing bids; guided by established policy and with minimum supervision, carries out broad assignments usually involving the purchase of important and critical items requiring extensive or specialized knowledge and experience. Interviews supplier representatives regarding specifications, costs, inspection, and similar problems relating to parts and equipment
Solicits bids and quotations; reviews and negotiates purchase contacts for major commitments;
analyzes and evaluates bids to determine optimum value; selects suppliers, issues purchase orders, follows up, and expedites as necessary; evaluates vendor reliability.
Develops new supply sources of supply where vendors and suppliers are inadequate. Develops new sources of supply based on industry trends and program needs. Utilizes strong project management abilities to manage milestones and actions to drive projects to completion. Works closely with Program Manager and Engineering to communicate supply chain lead time requirements for new purchased parts.
Excellent communication and follow up skills required. Ability to manage various and complex tasks and to manage time effectively.
Manages all first articles for new parts from the supply chain perspective. Working closely with Commodity Buyers, Is accountable for 100% of all parts delivered on-time to meet ship set #1 for all new programs. Assists buyers with any supplier issues with new products.
Negotiates contracts and agreements for program. Negotiates service contracts and approves extra work claims.
Discusses defective or unacceptable goods or services with inspection or quality control personnel, users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action.
Conducts value analysis studies and actively participates in Value Add/Value Engineering projects. Demonstrates project management abilities.
Performs other related duties as required.

Must be proficient in Excel
Demonstrated ability in reading drawings
Demonstrated ability and experience in understanding manufacturing processes.
Demonstrated ability and experience in participating in and conducting supplier audtits
Experience in contract negotiations
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor''s degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university; and five-to-eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
