DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction is the Joint Reconstruction business offering orthopaedic devices, solutions and supplies for hip, knee and extremity reconstruction, in addition to cement and operating room products.
The position is organized under the Front End Research & Development (FERD) department and will primarily support base business in the joint reconstruction division. The candidate''s primary responsibility will be to provide technical support to the operations and quality groups in efforts relating to materials and processes performed in the manufacture of medical products. The candidate must possess excellent problem-solving capabilities, be able to perform failure analysis, execute materials characterization studies independently and interpret results with little supervision. Candidate should be knowledgeable of processes such as investment casting, forging, vacuum furnace sintering, heat treatments, HIP, passivation, machining, and finishing operations and possess a strong practical knowledge of the metallurgy of non-ferrous alloys. Knowledge in cobalt, titanium and stainless steel alloys is desired. Knowledge of the UHMWPE polymer family would be an added asset.
Provide technical expertise to sustain the company''s commercialized technologies and provide investigative support on returned product.
Conduct and manage metallurgical projects in support of base business.
Conduct failure analysis investigations independently for orthopaedic implants and instruments.
Become a primary contact to find effective solutions to manufacturing problems related to metallic materials, heat-treating, sintering, casting, passivation, cleaning, etc.
Assist in the evaluation and disposition of non-conforming materials for both internal manufacturing and external vendor issues.
Provide assistance in materials selection and condition for a given application.
Should have the ability to interpret results and deliver effective solutions with little supervision.
Assist in the design and execution of OQ and PQ process validation programs as they pertain to materials and processes. Will be the materials representative on validation teams.
Will take the lead materials role for risk assessments.
Will assist in Regulatory audit items.
Perform analyses using SEM - EDS, optical microscopy, image analysis, metallography, NDI, or any method used to evaluate materials and processes.
Use good laboratory practices to perform hands-on metallurgical lab evaluations.
Write and maintain materials and processes specifications.
Interface with personnel from operations (US and WW), quality, product development, regulatory and research. Shall maintain good working relations and good communication with all.

Qualifications
A minimum 4-year bachelor''s degree in Materials Science or Metallurgy is required. Bachelor''s degree with 5 + years industry experience, master''s degree with 3+ years industry experience. Preference will be given to candidates with medical device or relevant industry experience in a materials or metallurgical capacity.Six Sigma training is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates who are Six Sigma Black Belts. Prior experience with processes such as investment casting, forging, heat treating, sintering, HIP, vacuum furnace processing. Knowledge of medical implant alloys such as cobalt, titanium, and stainless steel is desirable and knowledge of UHMWPE an added asset. Candidate should have superior communication and technical writing skills; and be comfortable making oral presentations. Ability to work independently in Metallurgical and Microscopy Lab. Ability to develop interdependent partnering relationships. Ability to use computer equipment and software, materials testing equipment, and equipment used for chemical and physical analysis.
