Instrument Processing Technician

Facility Description:

The facility is a newly formed multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center expected to open in July 2018. It is located on the campus of Tucson Medical Center. The center will focus predominantly on outpatient orthopedic and spine surgery, with some urological procedures and general surgeries as well. At its peak, it is expected to facilitate several thousand surgeries per year, utilizing four operating rooms. The center is a partnership between physicians, Tucson Medical Center, and SCA.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

The Instrument Processing Technician is responsible for maintaining instruments and equipment in an optimal fashion and preparing instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies for the surgical patient. The Instrument Processing Technician is responsible to assist with the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes, and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the clinical leader. The Instrument Processing Technician performs duties according to scope of practice designated by the facility position description, role and responsibilities and under the direction of the designated clinical leader.

Key Responsibilities:

+ Delivers safe patient care as directed by the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure.

+ Demonstrates ability to meet patients and family's learning needs as identified in the plan of care under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.

+ Functions as an Instrument Processing Technician under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.

+ Assists teammates with daily preparation for current and future facility schedules (pulling cases and assembling supplies) and in room turnover as assigned.

+ May act as scrub technician if experienced and needed in operating rooms or procedure rooms.

+ Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.

+ Participates in quality council to facilitate improvement of patient care.


+ High school graduate or equivalent

+ Understanding of sterilization and high-level disinfection technologies including industry standardized principles and practice in sterilization and disinfection required

+ Prior experience in instrument processing preferred

+ Prior experience as a surgical technologist/procedure technologist preferred

+ Successful completion of BCLS Course within 90 days of employment required or documentation of current BCLS certification

+ Certification in instrument processing is preferred.

+ Skills and Abilities

+ Ability to correlate clinical information with patient's care under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.

+ Ability to communicate well with patients, families, Teammates, physicians, other members of the healthcare team, etc.

+ Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency throughout the clinical areas of the facility.

+ Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual practice.

+ Ability to set priorities.
