LAB SECTION SPECIALIST - CHEMISTRY

PURPOSE OF YOUR POSITION
*
Assists Administrative Director of Laboratory as delegated in planning, coordinating and supervising all functions within the department including testing, staffing, training, scheduling, budgeting and maintaining supplies/ orders. Ensures that services are the best quality, cost-contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Is responsible for recognizing results and/or problems that require referral to the Medical Director, Associate Pathologist or the Administrative Director.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work frequently requires walking and prolonged standing and/or sitting up to 8 hours (21-50% of work time).

Work occasionally requires lifting lab supplies and other materials or equipment up to 50 lbs (21-50% of work time).

Visual acuity required to read instructions and examine specimen. Must be able to differentiate color on stained slides and ensure proper staining technique. Must be able to form perception required to perceive detail in cellular structure of varying size, symmetry in color.

Manual dexterity needed to work with very small specimen and operate microscope.
*
Work requires occasional travel to attend seminars and trainings (3-4 times per year).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
*
Work is perfromed in a climate controlled setting. Some discomfort due to crowded conditions, interruptions or noise from lab instruments (51-80% of work time).
*
Frequent exposure to biohazard materials, toxic waste, and infectious, irritant materials. Work requires the use of necessary safety equipment precautions while working with and around hazardous conditions (21-50% of work time).

Required to be available to work weekends as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
*
Bachelors of Science degree with certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist from the ASCP or other nationally recognized agency; or otherwise qualified as a General Supervisor under CLIA 88 with certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist from the ASCP or other nationally recognized agency. Five years experience required in Chemistry. Supervisory experience preferred.

Must be able to pass color discrimination test.

Pennsylvania state police criminal record check, child abuse history clearance and an FBI criminal history check required.

Work requires intermediate to advanced computer literacy skills and keyboard proficiency. Must have experience with laboratory information systems. Must also have experience working with clinical documentation systems and hospital information systems. Work requires basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.

Work requires interpersonal skills to manage staff, exchange information and communicate with team members, physicians, nurses and a high level of social sensitivity when communicating with patients (51-80% of work time).

Work requires advanced analytical skills to perform high complexity laboratory testing. Must be able to integrate and interpret information from diverse sources to identify solutions regarding, staff management, scheduling and policy compliance. Independent judgment is constantly required (more than 80% of work time).

Work requires a high level of mental and visual focus requiring mental application and attention to detail when performing and analyzing lab tests. Significant time spent working with microscopes and detecting slight variations. Work is performed under tight deadlines, must possess excellent time management and functional organizational skills to manage a variety of tasks in a short period of time (more than 80% of work time).
